California's population has experienced a notable rebound, marking its second consecutive year of growth after a period of decline. According to the California Department of Finance, the state's population increased by 108,000 residents in 2024, bringing the total to approximately 39.5 million as of January 1, 2025.
This resurgence is primarily attributed to a combination of factors, including a positive natural increase (births minus deaths), a rise in international immigration, and a slowdown in domestic outmigration. Governor Gavin Newsom highlighted this growth as indicative of California's economic resilience and appeal, stating that people are returning to the state to pursue opportunities and the "California Dream".
Among the state's largest cities, Bakersfield led with a 1.16% growth rate, adding approximately 4,787 residents. San Diego followed with a 1.05% increase, equating to about 14,620 new residents. Los Angeles also saw growth, albeit more modest, at 0.4%.
Conversely, some urban areas experienced slight declines. San Jose and San Francisco each saw their populations decrease by less than half a percentage point, reflecting ongoing challenges related to housing affordability and cost of living.
Notably, the Central Valley city of Shafter emerged as the fastest-growing city in California among those with populations over 20,000, registering a 4.7% increase. This growth is largely attributed to a surge in housing development and the expansion of industrial facilities.
Statewide, the housing stock grew by 0.8% in 2024, with significant contributions from the construction of accessory dwelling units, which increased by 14.3% . These developments suggest a positive trajectory for California's demographic and economic landscape.
